.Alice.
This picture is fanart for a game called "American McGee's Alice." The basic premise of the game is that Alice (from Lewis Carrol's "Through the Looking Glass") has had a traumatic time since her adventures in Wonderland. A tragic fire in the middle of the night killed both of her parents, and the pain and stress have caused her to lose her mind. She gets placed in an asylum and as she lays in her bed one night she finds herself returning to Wonderland... Except Wonderland has changed to reflect the dark, twisted place her mind has become.

When I sat down to draw a picture based on the dark and disturbed version of Alice from the game, I knew I couldn't just do a typical boring pose. I wanted to capture the fact that she really doesn't care about anything anymore. I wanted to do a picture that would preserve some aspect of the innocence that Alice has always had, but at the same time I wanted the viewer to feel uncomfortable with what she has become. I want the viewer to immediately disapprove of the brazen way she is revealing herself, but then perhaps feel pity as they see the sadness in her eyes. It's like... Alice isn't trying to be sexual in this picture, she's just trying to evoke some sort of reaction out of you to compensate for the emotions she has lost.

For this image, I actually drew four different pictures: Alice herself, the window, the mushroom scene in the background, and the word "Alice." I originally planned to use the logo from the game, but it just didn't seem... agressive enough. Not to say that the original artist did a poor job, but I don't think he/she took the idea far enough. It just seemed too non-threatening. So using the orginal logo as a reference, I drew my own version with what I hoped were more agressive sweeps and sharper curves. Dunno if I suceeded, but whatever.
