Fallen
by dan jones (8.12.01)
Walking all alone, I look into the sky.
The clouds where I was sitting only a few hours ago,
Mock me now, so far below.
I fell quickly, all of my hope draining away from me.
It took an instant for the words to crush that fragile dream.
Looking back, I try to remember exactly what my letter said.
I fear I've shown my hand,
And in doing so rendered my cards worthless.
I was so sure it was right this time.
My enthusiasm was a blindfold,
And all my hopes rested on a clumsily-swung broomstick.
I realized too late to defend myself.
I had surrendered my armor before you'd ever asked.
Now I lie at your mercy.
With a word, you could lift this burden and I could fly again.
Without you, my armor will grow heavier,
And it will grip me tighter than ever before.
